Teaching in the Face of Immigration, Incarceration, and Borders: Ethnic Studies Resistance

LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL MEChA HOSTS THE CALIFORNIA CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION 8TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL SAN DIEGO, CA — FEBRUARY 2, 2019 TEACHING IN THE FACE OF IMMIGRATION, INCARCERATION, AND BORDERS: ETHNIC STUDIES RESISTANCE The California Chapter of the National Association for Multicultural Education (CA-NAME) invites students, teachers, community members, artists and university faculty to participate in this year’s conference, “Teaching in the face of immigration, incarceration, and borders: Ethnic Studies Resistance.” Our conference theme is a response to the current political and actual intensification of surveillance, disciplining, and rigid categorization of minoritized groups in the borderlands. Our theme also recognizes that California is at the forefront of an ethnic studies movement to resist and reinterpret the disciplining ideologies and violence directed at disappearing minoritized communities through the implementation of ethnic studies K-12. Conference sessions will share how ethnic studies, decolonial, and critical multicultural education projects refuse unjust and inequitable narratives. Sessions will foster dialogue, share research, best practices (in teaching, curriculum, and organizing), and collaboration. For any questions, please contact: CA.Name.Conference@gmail.com or visit www.CaliforniaNAME.org REGISTER NOW HERE: https://www.123signup.com/register?id=rfgky

The People’s Gathering Conference

Pacific Lutheran University 12180 Park Avenue S., Tacoma, WA, United States

How people talk (or don’t talk) about race in their workplaces and educational environments is a strong indicator on whether an organization has an inclusive culture. It’s high-stakes! Intentionally preparing executives, managers, supervisors, administrators, faculty, students, and/or employees at all levels to engage in frank and, at most times, difficult conversations around diversity, equity, and inclusion is a strategic action towards mitigating risk, improving communication, and increasing productivity. The People’s Gathering: A Revolution of Consciousness conference is a professional/personal development learning experience and networking opportunity designed to move the (often dreaded) “Race Conversation” forward. The conference creates a supportive space in which participants engage in frank and open dialogue about race and racial disparities that are systemically present in work, school, and everyday life. They become more aware of how race shows up as structural barriers to realizing a diverse and inclusive environment and learn ways to navigate the sensitivity of it all by deepening personal understanding of the issues. When first held in 2017, The People’s Gathering gathered over 200 participants from all levels of government, education, business, and non-profit sectors. Participants responded that it proved a unique and fun opportunity to expand their professional and personal networks across cultures […]

Challenge the ‘Single Story’ of the Outdoors, Conservation, and Recreation

Mountaineers Seattle Program Center 7700 Sand Point Way NE,, Seattle, WA, United States

There is a ‘single story’ at the root of the meaning we’ve made of the outdoors, conservation, and our recreation in those environments. That single story, we’re coming to understand, has limited our ability to relate to those defined out of the story. Relationship is at the heart of the diversity, equity, and inclusion challenge to the ‘single story.’ This workshop will explore the ‘single story’ that defines our work and our play and the disrupting narratives of diversity, equity, and inclusion that are shifting the boundaries of power, margin, and center. A short reading or film clip will be assigned in advance.

Environmental Justice and Air Quality in the Era of Citizen Science

Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre Hotel 1088 Burrard St, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Running-Grass will be making a presentation at the 2020 Air Quality and Health Workshop in Vancouver, B.C. in February.  The theme of this year’s conference is “Environmental Justice of Air Quality in the Era of Citizen Science”.  His presentation focuses on the policy implications of EJ and the value of cultural assets and social capital in community based science projects. The focus of  the BC Lung Association's upcoming 17th Annual Air Quality and Health Workshop is the environmental justice of air quality in the era of citizen science. Marginalized communities are often disproportionately exposed to environmental hazards in comparison with the overall population. In response, the environmental justice movement has evolved, with a focus on equitable distribution of environmental benefits and burdens. The concept of environmental justice includes not only equal protection for all people under environmental laws, regulations, and policies, but also significant involvement of potentially impacted communities in environmental policy and natural resource development decisions. Organized annually, the workshop brings together air quality and environmental health experts and policymakers to share new insights regarding priority public health issues. Register Here
